MX Record
A record of a Domain Name's mail servers.
Name Server
The servers for a Domain Name. There must be two, but there may be as many as six.
NIC
Network Information Centre e.g. Nominet UK runs the .uk extensions.

This is where change/registration is sent out across the Internet. It normally takes between 24-72 hours for the change/registration to propagate, i.e. be visible across the whole Internet.

The individual organization making the registration.

An organization appointed to manage a Top-Level Domain, e.g. Nominet manages .uk.
RNCA
Registrant Name Change Agreement. This is a change of the ownership document that is signed by the party giving up the rights of ownership of a Domain Name to a new party.
SLD
Second-Level Domain. The second string from the right e.g. the .co in .co.uk
Sunrise Challenge Period
Duration in which the Sunrise Registration Challenge Policy will apply.
Sunrise Period
Limited period of time where domain registrations are reserved for holders of prior rights.
TLD
Top-Level Domain (see ccTLD or gTLD).
Transfer
Reassignment of ownership of a Domain Name from one party to another.
UDRP
Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy - arbitration clause to resolve Domain Name disputes.
Whois
System of looking up Domain Name information. Not all NICs have a Whois facility and it can therefore be very difficult to obtain accurate registration dates.
WIPO
World Intellectual Property Organization - an international body dedicated to promoting the use and protection of works of the human intellect.
Zone Check
A tool that assesses the set-up of a Domain Name on a specified network of servers.
